Periods on holiday are no laughing matter…
One thing I’ve been raving on about since the beginning of my trip was how happy I was to have discovered the menstrual cup when I did. Not only did it save me loads of money and the stress of finding the right products (at the right time!!) it allowed me to completely forget that I was on my period at all!
You see, there are lots of benefits from switching from the old (kinda scary) tampon/pad duo, but the main advantage for me was to be able to swim freely without the fear of *cough* leaking… or the dreaded string making an appearance while lounging on the beach!
I started my menstrual cup journey about 5 years ago, two years before I started travelling. The first thoughts I had on any menstrual cup products was that it’s a little out there, I thought only super environmentalists woman used these kind of products. If I’m honest the thought of it initially made me feel a little queasy! I talked myself out of transitioning so many times before I eventually took the “plunge”.
what about if it gets stuck?
what about if it leaks?
How will I clean it discreetly?
All these questions but no answers. So I turned to YouTube for reviews hoping for answers. During my search I found that the “Saalt Cup” was the best rated menstrual cup in terms of leak free days and ease to insert. So went ahead and ordered their regular Saalt cup. They have a quiz on their website where they tell you which cup would work best for you, and they were 100% right.
I got the hang of using the Saalt cup after my first cycle and couldn’t wait for the next month to practise again! I’d bring it up in conversations with the girls and was surprised to learn that some of them were using one too!! I think you’ll be surprised on how many people have left the outdated tampon/pad duo behind. Since then I’ve met 100s of women also taking advantage of this life hack!
I run on a 28 day cycle, I’m lucky in that sense as I know exactly when I’m due on. So the day before/on the day of my period I insert my cup and forget the rest!
